Bandwidth and Updates

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

I checked my bandwidth just now and I was surprised to see this.

809.82MB for August 2007.  More importantly, look at the average Number of Visits.  I wasn’t expecting that much and there are still 2 more days in August! My readership must be increasing.  Some how my bandwidth sky rocketed and my readership increased slightly.   The high bandwidth is mostly because I linked my userbar in lowyat.net to my hosting server.

300MB increase in just one month is insane.  Maybe my readers are clicking my old posts.  Thanks guys.  I might be able to blog for money after all.  Most of my readers are my friends anyway.

Anyway, I’ve been busy looking for serviced apartments in Sydney for my family when we visit my brother this October.  Still waiting for their replies though.

My exams are near.  This will be the last semester for my first year MBA.  Next semester will be more challenging as everything is external, i.e. linked directly to University of Southern Queensland, Australia.  Not thinking about yet as I need to pass this exam.  Crucial period!

I’ve made up my mind to specialize in Project Management.  It might come in handy if I want to help my dad’s business, it might also be handy if I plan to go in to a field where there are loads of projects.

To my readers (you know who you are), thanks for reading my rantings here, please leave comments on my entries.

Anyway, it’s Merdeka (Malaysia’s independence day) in 2 days time.  Happy Merdeka and happy holidays to everyone!

P.S. A little update on my back condition.  I just finished my tenth physio therapy session the other day.  I am feeling a lot better.  I can walk straighter, faster but some how, I still could not walk for long.  After walking for 10 minutes or so, my body tends to shift to my right and the pain starts kicking in.

Business talk

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

I just bought a Nintendo Wii for my brother.  It’s going to be his birthday gift cum graduation present.  He is graduating from University of Sydney on 19th October 2007.  The next day is his 23rd birthday.  I had a lot of fun on the Wii.  Yes, “had”.  I am never a video games guy.  I do play a lot of video games when I was younger but the games I play are very, erm…, shallow.  I like games where you don’t have to think so much, where you could start playing whenever you like it.  Games like Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider are totally out for me.  It requires too much thinking!

Anyway, my dad came back from Papua New Guinea today.  He talked to be about one of the problems he is facing in his business in Malaysia.  This is the first time he asked my opinion on something like that.  He usually asks my brother, which has a better understanding of the business world as he is studying commerce in uni.  Maybe it’s because I’ve been “exposed” to the business world a bit via my MBA courses.  I gave him my opinion and I was glad he agreed, and I am also glad that my views are the same as my brother’s.  I am totally new to all these stuff but I am thinking in line with a commerce graduate and a businessman with more than 30 years of experience.

I’ve been thinking of starting my own business for some time now but the thing is, I don’t really know what to expect from the business world out there.  Starting your own business and working for some one is totally different.  I don’t even know where to start.  I don’t have any money to start with.  I don’t have any concept.  I don’t have any ideas.  I don’t even know what type of business should I venture into.

My dad and my uncles runs a family business left by my grandfather.  I’m sure one of these days, it’ll be my brother, me and my cousins running the company.   There are a lot of young and successful people out there.  I want to be one of the young and successful people as well.  I want to be able to afford the finer things in life, without depending on anyone.  I want to be able to buy my dream car (which is a Subaru Impreza S203, if you were wondering).  I want to be able to buy my dream house.  I want to be able to provide a comfortable living for my family, like what my dad provided me with.

Maybe someday I’ll be able to see what is right for me to venture in.  Some day……

P.S. Raymond, Happy belated birthday.  I didn’t know my admission date was your birthday!

Mixing work with studies

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

I handed up my assignments the other day and finished my freelance stuff.  Ken just came by and took the printers back.  Oh yeah, I did my first reviews for the magazine.

I had the pleasure of combining my studies with my work, where I could print my assignments AND evaluate/review the printers.  The best part is, I get paid for that!

Anyway, I had dinner with my ex-colleagues the other day and they were surprised and I quote heart ached at my condition.  They were very concerned about my condition.

Thanks guys.  I really appreciate it and I am recovering, albeit slow, but I am recovering.

Justin Koh - A Formal Introduction

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

I noticed I have not been introducing myself to you guys. Most of you people reading my blog knows who I am personally but I think some of you guys don’t really know who I am. Well, this is an “About Me” entry.

I am Justin Koh Quo Ch’ng. Yes, I have a funny name that even me myself could not pronouce. I was born on 27th September 1983 in Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia. I was borned in a family where my parents gave me the best and they still do.

I have a younger brother. The relationship with my brother was never been good, until recently. I don’t know why is it like that but I guess most siblings act like us when they are young. Maybe it’s because I see him only once a year since 2001. He is studying in Sydney and graduating in October 2007.

I was in Malaysia until about 6 years old, then my father brought me to this country called Papua New Guinea. I was there for about 1 year, studying in Boroko International school. I do not have much memory about that place now but I know I’ve spent a wonderful time there. I came back when I was 7, then my dad enrolled me into a chinese school, Yoke Nam. I didn’t know a single word of chinese back then and I really had a hard time coping with my studies since both my parents are English educated, heck, the teacher used English to teach me Chinese.

After 6 years in Yoke Nam, I was enrolled in to a Chinese high school, Chong Hwa Independent High School, one of the best schools in Kuala Lumpur. I spent 2 years there then I dropped out because I couldn’t cope with the studies there. I was required to repeat my second year there. I dragged my brother along as well. I still feel that he’d do a lot better if I hadn’t drag him out of the school with me.

My parents then enrolled us into a national school, Taman Yarl. It’s not the best school in town, in fact, it was one of the worst but this is the school where I meet most of my best friends. This is the school that I have memory of. This is the school that I completed my secondary studies. Most importantly, this is the school where I met the love of my life.

14th June 2000 is a date I’ll never forget. This is the day where she said “Ok”. This is the day where I am no longer single. It’s been more than 7 years now and we are still together. We’ve been through ups and downs but our love is still as sweet as it was 7 years ago.

After secondary school, I went to INTI College in Subang Jaya, where I started my degree course in Computer Science. This is also where I meet the other half of my best friends. I didn’t excel in my studies, I was just doing averagely. I was never a “perfect A” student. I managed to enrolled into University of Hull in England to do my final year.

September 2003, I went to England to pursue my studies. This is the first time where I’ll be staying alone, where I’ll be able to taste independence from my family. I have to wash my own clothes, cook/buy my own food, manage my time, money and also my studies. Despite that, I met a lot of friends in uni and they helped me in managing my stuff. I didn’t get very good results but I managed to graduate with a degree in Computer Science.

After my studies, I came back to Malaysia and worked. I worked for slightly more than 2 years in a company then I quit. I’ve had a lot of memories in my short lived work life. I’ll never forget the first day and the last day of my job.

I was diagnose with a slipped disc in my back, causing me pain shooting down the legs and difficulties in walking. I had a micro lumbar disectomy done onto my disc in August 2003, just before I leeave for England. I was feeling a lot better after the surgery but the disc grew back recently, pinching on my nerves causing even more pain to my legs.

I have a lot of people caring me in my life. My family, my girlfriend and my friends. I’ll try my best to recover and I’ll try my best to pay back my gratitudes to everyone who cared for me.

And that’s me, Justin Koh.

Thank you!

Blogging for money

Friday, August 10th, 2007

I took some time off from my assignments to write this entry.  Assignments are killing me.  Anyway, back to the topic.

As a computing student and an IT fellow, I never liked the idea of the internet by just writing about stuff and getting paid for it.  It sounds too good to be true.  The internet is full of traps where people get conned of their oney and sorts, like the infamous Nigerian letter.

Previously, the things that I don’t like is

  • Most of these people are located overseas.  If you need to call them for some reason, you’ll have to wait until it’s the right time and spend on IDD calls.
  • As a computing student, I just don’t trust them.

Things have changed.  Blogs are the “in” thing now.  There are loads of people blogging and these Ad companies are looking more and more legitimate.

In the Malaysian scene, there are two companies offering these type of services, Nuffnang and Advertlets.  I don’t know about Advertlets, but Nuffnang is getting big.  Every blog I go, their ads are there.  They hold gatherings and movie previews and stuff.

I’ve been reading TImothy’s blog for some time now.  He is the co-founder of Nuffnang and he doesn’t look like a Nigerian Prince.

So the things I didn’t like previously is solved, they are located in Malaysia and I trust Timothy’s infamous mole.

So I went to Nuffnang’s site, thinking of registering myself and get some ads, so that I could make some money out of my blog until I saw the first condition that I must accept:

My blog has 20 or more unique visitors each day.

How am I going to get 20 visitors to my humble blog?

So I gave up registering.  Maybe next time.
